Is the cost of living in Christchurch high?
We asked people how much they someone comfortably live on in Christchurch, they wrote:
"The cost of living in Christchurch is considered moderate compared to other major cities in the country. Housing is relatively affordable, with rental prices lower than in cities like Auckland or Wellington. The cost of utilities such as electricity, heating, cooling, and garbage is also reasonable. Groceries in Christchurch can be slightly expensive, with prices for fresh produce, meat, and dairy products being higher than in some other countries. Eating out in restaurants can vary, with a meal at an inexpensive restaurant being quite affordable, while a three-course meal for two at a mid-range restaurant can be more costly. Transportation costs in Christchurch are also moderate. Public transportation is widely available and affordable, and while owning a car can be expensive due to the cost of petrol and maintenance, it is still within reach for many residents. Healthcare in New Zealand is largely publicly funded, and residents have access to free or low-cost healthcare services. However, private healthcare is also available for those who prefer it, and this can be more expensive. Overall, while the cost of living in Christchurch is not the cheapest, it is still considered affordable, especially when compared to other major cities in New Zealand," explained one expat.
