What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Al Qunfudhah?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Al Qunfudhah about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Saudi Arabia. The country has both public and private healthcare, with the latter often being the preferred choice for expats due to shorter waiting times and English-speaking staff. Ensure that you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care. Some insurance companies require a waiting period before you can claim for maternity care, so plan ahead. Find a good obstetrician and hospital for your prenatal care and delivery. Ask for recommendations from other expats or your embassy. Understand the cultural norms and customs in Saudi Arabia. Women are expected to dress modestly, and this extends to maternity wear. Learn some basic Arabic phrases, especially related to healthcare and pregnancy. This will be helpful during your hospital visits. Respect the local customs and laws. In Saudi Arabia, it is illegal for unmarried couples to live together, and this extends to having a baby. Make sure you have the proper documentation to prove your marital status. Prepare for the heat, especially if you're pregnant during the summer months. Stay hydrated and avoid going out during the hottest part of the day. Finally, build a support network. Being an expat can be isolating, especially when you're dealing with pregnancy and childbirth. Join expat groups, attend social events, and don't hesitate to ask for help when you need it," mentioned another expat when asked about moving to Al Qunfudhah, Saudi Arabia.
