What do expats find most challenging?
We asked expats and digital nomads what they find the most challenging about the local culture in Vung Tau. They wrote...
"Expats in Vung Tau often find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture. Vietnamese is a tonal language, which can be difficult for foreigners to learn and understand. Another challenge is the difference in social norms and etiquette. For instance, Vietnamese people often avoid direct eye contact as a sign of respect, which can be misinterpreted by Westerners as a lack of confidence or honesty. The concept of "saving face" is also prevalent in Vietnamese culture. This means avoiding confrontations and maintaining harmony in relationships, which can sometimes lead to misunderstandings or miscommunications. Food can also be a challenge for some expats, as Vietnamese cuisine is vastly different from Western food. It often includes ingredients and flavors that may be unfamiliar or unappealing to foreigners. Lastly, the traffic and driving habits in Vung Tau can be overwhelming for expats. The roads are often crowded with motorbikes and cars, and the driving style can seem chaotic and unpredictable to those not used to it," said another expat in Vung Tau, Vietnam.
