What is it like to retire in Al Ula?
We asked retirees what it is like retiring in Al Ula. They said...
"Al Ula, is a place of rich history and natural beauty, making it an interesting place for retirees. The city is known for its rock formations and ancient tombs, providing ample opportunities for exploration and sightseeing. The UNESCO World Heritage site, Al-Hijr (Madain Salih), is a major cultural attraction that draws in both locals and tourists. Retirees can enjoy a peaceful life in Al Ula, with its slow-paced lifestyle and warm, desert climate. The city is not heavily populated, which can be a plus for those seeking tranquility in their retirement years. However, this also means that there might not be a large expat community. Recreational activities in Al Ula are mostly centered around its natural and historical attractions. Hiking, photography, and bird watching are popular activities. The city also hosts the annual Winter at Tantora Festival, a cultural event featuring music concerts, art exhibitions, and other cultural activities. As for nightlife, Al Ula is not known for its bustling night scene. The city's conservative culture and religious practices mean that nightlife is generally quiet and low-key. However, there are a few restaurants and cafes where one can enjoy a quiet evening. Healthcare facilities in Al Ula are adequate but not as advanced as in larger cities like Riyadh or Jeddah. For serious medical conditions, one might need to travel to these larger cities. Overall, life for a retiree in Al Ula would be peaceful and culturally rich, but perhaps lacking in a vibrant social scene or advanced healthcare facilities," remarked another expat who made the move to Al Ula, Saudi Arabia.
