today's visa experience (positive) and question

I have been living in Costa Rica since November. I was also here in May and crossed the border to Panama twice in that time with no hassles at all. Today I went with my friend to Panama just so we could drive down to Puerta Amuelles (spelling...), My friend is a permanent resident of Costa Rica. He showed his residency card and the papers for his car and his passport, and all they asked me for was my passport. All this to say-no hassles--didn't have to show a credit card statement or $500, didn't have to show my return airplane ticket or a bus ticket...nada. I was prepared because I know many have had problems coming into Panama. My friend and the other two we were with (also Americans) were saying that part of it is that we were dressed well--no backpacker look, etc--and that we are older (50s/60s). I have no idea if that's accurate but they've done it enough with no hassles so they believe that it is probably an accurate thing to say. My question is...how long is the Panama visa good for. It does not say on the stamp (Costa Rica says 90 days). I looked it up on the embassy's website and it says UP TO 180 DAYS. How do we know? Is it 30 days, 60, or 180, or?
Thank you
