Panama City Rental with a Dancing Pole

Some 25 citation slips were issued during the operation to detect clandestine lodging in Bella Vista and El Cangrejo. In apartment 15B of one of these buildings, inhabited for two months by a 68-year-old American citizen, a pole for exotic dances was installed in the center of the room and the tenant presented a lease that is not registered in the MIVIOT. Tenants did not have the corresponding lease contracts in other buildings either; in addition, the rooms were subleased in 600, 300 and 150 dollars to foreigners in their majority.

It was explained that the rental of these apartments was promoted through Internet platforms. "It is not the owners of the apartment who rent but the tenants, who sublet and who have made illegal accommodation a business," The ATP has received so far this year about 300 complaints. In 2017 fines total $ 100,000. The fines have been applied according to the payment of 10 times the rental rent of these apartments.

Law 80 of November 8, 2012, establishes in article 21, that any lease less than forty-five days is prohibited in the district of Panama, to those who do not have a permit for public tourist accommodation (buildings or residences). This act will be sanctioned by the ATP, with fines ranging from five thousand Balboas to fifty thousand dollars.
