Panama Geisha Coffee $1029 per pound winner

Willoughby’s Coffee & Tea was a successful bidder of the world’s most expensive coffee this past Tuesday in the Best of Panama international auction. The coffee is Panama Elida Green Tip Geisha Natural. The coffee fetched a record $1,029 per unroasted pound. Willoughby’s will get about 10% of the mere 100 pounds auctioned.

In addition to its record price, this coffee set a world competition scoring record, attaining an average score of 95.25 points from an international jury of 21 judges from around the globe including Barry Levine, owner of Willoughby’s, who has served as a juror at this event many times.

Elida Estate, located at one of the highest elevations in Boquete, Panama, won both top categories this year, Natural & Special Processes Geisha and Washed Geisha, out of hundreds of coffees entered. This is an especially significant achievement as they repeated their double win from the prior year, an unheard-of feat. Last year’s coffee set the prior record of $803 per pound.
The 100 pounds of coffee, a tiny amount, will be shared by several international companies, mainly in Asia. US customers will have access through Willoughby’s Coffee & Tea, which also ships internationally. Additionally, Willoughby’s will be organizing a future event, so that interested consumers may have a chance to try this unique coffee.
Elida Estate in Panama is owned by the Lamastus Family. Their work and that of neighboring farm owners have produced some of the world’s finest coffee in recent years. The winning lot has a distinct taste from a combination of factors including a unique micro climate and Elida’s volcanic soils surrounded by virgin forest. This creates fertile ground for the Geisha variety which is originally from Ethiopia but has found a perfect home in Boquete, Panama. The coffee was grown on an ideal plot of highland called Torre, the same site where last year’s winning coffees derived. It then underwent a special dry process referred to as ASD for Anaerobic Slow Dry which lengthens the drying time and concentrates flavors. All of these factors combined to make an outstanding, record-setting Geisha coffee.
