Uber Cash Payments in Panama

On September 30, the extension granted by the Panamanian government ends, so that the Uber transportation service platforms can continue to make their cash collections.

The Minister Counselor for Foreign Investment Facilitation, José Alejandro Rojas, said that the payment method to be transported in the Uber system and other technological platforms in Panama must be defined by the Ministry of Government (Mingob) and the Transit Authority and Ground Transportation (ATTT).

The statements of the minister were given Monday during a Cabinet Council in the Presidency Amphitheater.

The transportation platform warned that if the government maintains the ban on cash receipts it will lose half of its customers and jeopardize investments in the country.

In 2017, the administration of the then president Juan Carlos Varela approved this decree that allowed the collection in cash. The decree has been extended three times.

The extension was intended for the platforms to seek management options before the Panamanian banking system or other forms of payment, in addition to the use of the credit card, to help the user pay for the luxury transport service without using cash.

The company has its operations center for the Caribbean in the country and has invested about $ 20 million since 2014, according to George Gordón, general manager of Uber for Latin America, to the French news agency AFP.

The service is an option for 280 thousand users per quarter in the country. The company, which through an application contacts private drivers with users, is promoted as a reliable, safe and friendly service.

Taxi drivers have repeatedly protested against the technology platform claiming that the service provided by Uber is an 'unfair competition' for selective regulated transport in the country.
