Expat Advice: Relationships in Rhon, Germany

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Rhon

What is your current status? Are you single, dating, in a long-term relationship, married or divorced?

I am married without children.

What is it like in your country of residence for someone with your relationship status (married/divorced/dating)? If you're single, how do you meet other people? Do English-speaking people tend to gravitate to certain parts of your city?

Your question is very broad. Generally I would say, it has very little difference than that in America. No, they don't. But I used to live in the Frankfurt/M area, and in the late 80's early 90's there were scores of them.

If you do not have children, do you generally spend your social time with other expat couples? If not, what else do you like to do as a couple?

No, because I live in a remote rural area in Germany, and professionally I do not work with English-speaking people very often. We like to go sailing.

If you are married or in a relationship with a person of another nationality, how has this experience enriched you as a person. What kind of challenges do you face?

It increased my acceptance as a valid person in the community up to 95%. Living as a foreigner in Germany means no matter how much you try to integrate - no matter how hard one strives to be German - it remains an unattainable goal.

What would be the best advice you could give someone with your relationship status that lives in your country of residence? Any other thoughts?

I would suggest that German / North American /Non-European couples get married in Denmark to avoid the paperwork hassle that the North American spouse is forced to go through in Germany. Getting married in Denmark is as about as complicated as getting married in Vegas, whereas getting married in Germany is only possible after going on a long wild goose chase for paperwork, and finally leaving the decision up to a German Court of Law whether they will allow you to marry or not.
