Looking to temporarily retire in Vietnam

My partner has just been to Vietnam for an extended trip. He is rather keen to relocate there. I am not so sure. it doesn't help that I haven't been there yet!
I have been reading a lot on the forum and other places.
I am thinking we would be best to go for 6 months or similar to see how we really feel and what we would busy ourselves doing.
From a lot of what I read here and other places on the internet - seems western men are welcome with open arms.. What about old western women??? At my age I really can't be fussed with coping with young 20-30 year old all over my partner LOLOL - now that IS a joke. I don't mean to offend.
Basically I want to know how welcoming is it for an older woman. I intend to TRY to learn the language and really want to experience the culture - not just be a tourist. We are considering moving to enhance and change our lifestyle - not try and live an Aussie lifestyle in a foreign country. Of course its about cost too - I keep reading everywhere that retiring in Asia - our limited funds will go a lot further and have a better quality of life. Subjective I know... but any input on life for a 50+ western woman in Vietnam.
