Expat Advice: Relationships in Torreon, Mexico
What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?
Torreon
What is your current status? Are you single, dating, in a long-term relationship, married or divorced?
Married
What is it like in your country of residence for someone with your relationship status (married/divorced/dating)? If you're single, how do you meet other people? Do English-speaking people tend to gravitate to certain parts of your city?
Women of social standing are expected to be in a stable, married relationship and most interested in home-life. Sunday papers often contain photos of couples married thirty, forty, or fifty years, surrounded by their children, grandchildren, etc.
If you have children, what advice would you give to others making a similar transition to your country of residence?
Family and children are highly valued in Mexican culture as a whole. Children are brought to almost all social events, and it is not unusual to see very small children out at weddings or attending a fair into the wee hours of the morning. Education is also highly valued, and for all children, much emphasis is put on doing very well in school.
What would be the best advice you could give someone with your relationship status that lives in your country of residence? Any other thoughts?
Make sure you have a stable relationship and good communication skills before moving. Any expat experience can put strains on any relationship, but if you have a relationship that is challenged already, the strain of living in a culture other than your own, might push that relationship to the breaking point.
