EJ Morelos, Baja California

Describe how you "dreamed" expat life would be before you moved overseas. Please provide as much detail as possible.

I had retired and my wife [Mexican citizen] lived in Tucson, AZ... my mother-in-law had a series of strokes and was given less than 6 months to live by her doctors. My wife and I had previously bought a tiny "retirement/safe house" in Mexicali where she was from... I promised my wife we would stay until my mother-in-law passed away.... my wife became her "care giver" and 13 years later she died. I hated all 13 years... Mexicali is a city of over 1 million.... dirty, hotter than you can believe... I was miserable... My son and daughter-in-law own a ranch in EJ Morelos - about 65 miles from Mexicali in the Valley of the Sun [Mexicali Valley]... so my wife and I moved to the ranch... and we both love it! A week can go by without having a visitor. Peaceful and quiet....

How has your expat experience met the expectations you dreamed about before you moved abroad?

Drastically different that what I had planned... retire to Florida.... but I seem to be fitting in as well as any gringo can in Mexico. I know a lot of shop keepers and get treated very well in our small town.

How has your expat experience NOT met the expectations you dreamed about before you moved abroad?

Have you heard of the "gringo tax"? This is an added fee that is charged to anyone who earns dollars or is a gringo... what a neighbor would hire some one for costs me almost double.... it is the way of life here....
