Getting to Lake Bacalar

My partner and I are planning a trip to Lake Bacalar in late April to explore the region and look at property, with the idea of making this our eventual retirement location. We live on the coast of Maine and flights to Cancun are reasonable. It's getting from Cancun to Chetumal that is the budget buster! The flights are almost as expensive as from Maine to Cancun. Bacalar is a beautiful region but getting there is more of a challenge that I expected it would be. What other options are available to get from Cancun to the Bacalar area? Bus? And if so, what sort of buses are they and how long would it probably take? Renting a car is possible I suppose but since neither of us speak Spanish yet, that idea is a bit intimidating. Any experienced travel suggestions or feedback will be appreciated.

Also, there don't seem to be many conversations on this forum concerning Bacalar, but if there are any members of this forum currently living in the Bacalar area who would be willing to chat with me about their experiences, property availability, costs, etc., I would be very interested in hearing from you! Feel free to send me a private messgae if you prefer!

Thanks everyone!
