Grand experience with Mex Hospital

Day 5 afternoons from USA my partner, Jack, woke with horrible pain in stomach. Unreasonably horrible. I called the emergency doctor number. Within 15 minutes he was at our condo, did an exam ($150 US) called the hospital in Playa del Carmen and wrote up instructions for the doctor and emergency room there. He gave us the option of ambulance ($500 US) or I could drive the 12 miles. I drove him. Arrived at Hospiten in PDC emergency room, the doctor examined him and told both of us what the plan was. It is a private Spanish hospital. They took our AMEX and proceeded to stabilize him going up the 'ladder' from exam to MRI with X-ray and Scan in between to make sure they knew the cause of te pain. Burst appendix. The surgeon came in and said now they knew what the cause was he would operate soon and could ease the pain finally. I was beside myself but how could he go to USA for treatment with Medicare? So gave the okay and called AMEX to let them know what was happening with my charge card! Everyone was wonderful and very informative. They operated at 6 PM that night after filling him with antibiotics and getting his blood glucose levels down. The doctor kept me informed the whole time by sending a nurse out with messages. It was nearly 10 PM when the doctor himself came out and told me they were unable to do the surgery laparoscopically as when the scope was inserted they saw he was filled with infection and other things (won't mention) and it appeared his appendix had burst 24 to 48 hours before. They had to cut a huge opening to literally clean all his organs due to the infection. They kept him 4 days. Total cost for everything, less than $10,000. In our opinion, they saved his life. Medicare refuses to cover it and says we should have come to US. FYI I failed to say he is 74 years old. We have since decided to stay here in Puerto Aventuras and love our new home on the Caribbean. We checked on medical insurance thru Cigna for us, $1300 per month. We decided to self insure. Plus kept Plan F Supplemental insurance with $1000 deductible in case of cancer or something we would go back to USA for treatment due to cost. Can't say enough about great health care here in our area. Cancun is 1 hour away as an option.
