Need lots of suggestions

Hey,
This is such a great site - it seems so many people are willing to put in their two cents, and that ends up giving a very rounded picture in the end. I asked a question before, and had many helpful responses, so I'm going to ask another question……
You all know that the papers in the US portray Mexico as a crime riddled frightening place to go unless you are staying at an American owned giant hotel etc. So I'm trying to get some more clarified insight from people who have been living in Mexico for a good while.
Here's the problem - We are interested, for a variety of reasons, in Moving to Mexico. We are older and have 2 kids (12 & 16), and 4 dogs. We are unwilling to give up our dogs (or the kids haha). We are not all that well off financially that we can live in Mexico periodically and then come back to the US and then go back to Mexico etc until we decide on a location. I've been to Mexico several times, but only as a tourist. I've liked much of what I've seen, but no where is perfect in all ways, right?
So I've been trying to figure out how to go about doing what we need to do - come and look around….with 2 teenagers and 4 dogs….yeah, well, how is that going to work? What about an RV?
We have an old RV, 30' long, which has been my husbands personal project for years. He even changed the brakes himself and a bunch of other stuff. It's a sufficient way for all of us to get around(we homeschool)…at least in the US. I have no idea if this would be feasible in Mexico, or would be a totally stupid idea. I'd like to know something about it before I go off and do something causing my family to be, well, who knows what?
I realize that being in an RV means you have to be a bit careful wherever you are, but you know what I'm talking about, right? Are we going to be stalked, killed, robbed, tortured - or should I say, is the likelihood of such things a great deal higher in Mexico ( I'm not talking about being in really bad areas of big cities - just on the open road and smaller towns).
I've traveled quite a bit, with kids and often the pets, so I'm not totally naive about possible dangers. I just want to get an idea whether the idea of traveling around in Mexico in an RV with kids and dogs is a really fruitcake idea, or not, and why. I also understand that we would have to be careful of the routes we would choose, as the roads are not all that great in many areas.
Thanks for reading this unfortunately loooong post. I hope to hear from a bunch of you.
Briar
