Do not accept help at the ATM

Take your card and leave as fast as you can. This incident occurred at BANorte in Rosarito, across the street from the Rosarito beach hotel.

I never wanted any help, but this guy insisted "You want dollars? This machine.", and then standing behind me, he says "Oh, you want dollars? The other machine". That machine came up with a bunch of text in Spanish that I could only partially make out. (I've used these machines before, and they've always been bilingual.)

Anyway, the guy is still there and tells me (or actually he insisted, as I was trying to ignore him) it wants my PIN. I typed my PIN and it appeared on the screen - for him to see. This is when I decided to take my card and leave. However, the card would not come out, iI argued with the machine for a while and the machine eventually ate my card, and then displayed "out of service",,

I left the ATM and immediately called Schwab - longest wait time I've ever experienced with Schwab, they're usually very prompt. But while i was explaining the incident to the Schwab representative, I received an incoming call from the Schwab 800 number.. Someone had just caked in with my card number and was trying to get info on my account. However, that caller did not answer any of the security questing correctly, thereby putting Schwab on the alert.

Anyway, my Schwab card has been deactivated, and I'm waiting for a replacement. Also, I have no online access to my account for a couple of days.

It sounds ti me like the trickster may have received help from inside the bank (after the ATM took my card). Either that or he saw my card briefly and was able to memorize the numbers very quickly.

If a stranger attempts to interfere with your ATM transaction, take your card and leave quickly. And call your bank quickly too. If the ATM bank is open or there is a security guard present, you might consider reporting to them also. However, there was no bank representative present during this incident.
