As far as I know, you just have to be a citizen. If you filed income tax in 2018 or 2019 & received a refund into a bank account, the stimulus check would have automatically been deposited into the same account by the IRS. If you didn't receive a refund or didn't have a bank account on file with the IRS, the check would be mailed to you.

I receive social security, Mine was mailed.

You don't have to be a citizen. I have friends that are legal residents and they get the check. They file a tax return just like citizens. My check is being mailed out on May 20 according to the website.

When we first contacted the government we were told our payments would be automatically deposited, since that is how we receive our SS payments. After waiting for weeks we are now told they were mailed as checks on May 1 to our old address in Mérida. This means they will have to be forwarded to Mexico City, signed, and sent back to the US for deposit in our bank there. It will likely be July before this is all done, since it will take as much as six weeks to arrive in Mérida, and it will cost us a lot in Estafeta costs.

I have no idea why this was changed, since our bank account is registered with the IRS. The system in the US is obviously no more competent than elsewhere, in spite of the degree to which they like to denigrate other country's procedures!

I think someone dose not like American who live oversea and have non American spouse or children that is sad. My Spouse get hell of lot more from Canada than we get from USA and our neighbour who is from the UK get 80% of his pay check each month

Living overseas, could I lose my U.S. citizenship? Your residency status abroad has no effect on your U.S. citizenship. ... The only way to lose your U.S. citizenship is to renounce it formally. You can't lose your U.S. citizenship accidentally. If you are a U.S. citizen, you are able to continue to collect retirement, disability, or survivors' benefits while overseas "i do not claim my wife or children my wife claim them on her Canadian taxes " So i am only claiming my self honey and bless you little heat and i do mean little

Sorry, Gwynnedd, but your comment is inane and offensive. Americans abroad still pay taxes and contribute to the economy. They are citizens just like everyone else, and entitled to the same benefits unless congress specifically says otherwise, which they did not do. Try to keep up with the news, cupcake, and perhaps think a bit before posting nonsense in public!

I am not sure the stimulus check is about the economy. I think the check is about those eligible that have been effected by the virus.
I actually think the process should have been more selective in who gets a check.....Me for example. I have plenty of money coming in. Financially I am the same now as before. Other than being inconvenienced by social distancing and business being affected that I deal with has been a pain. But did I really need the check? NO. If you really want to be fair I should have been forced to donate to the cause not the other way around. It makes no sense to give money to those who do not need it and can prove they have been affected financially like losing a job. Just another example of the efficiency of the government handing out money to those not needing or worthy of their help.

i agree with you hrlee 7804 my retirement and my wifes retirement checks keeps us well off but on the other hand all the big businesses that have off shore tax heavens should also give up their check but that will never happen. You know that as well as i do and they are making multi billion dollars a year but make people who are making under $40,000 a year only get $1,200. They are saying they were hurt by the people only making under $40,000 a year not buying their products. How about we take the total that was to be given out and divide it equally with everyone.

First answer to person questioning why an American living in MX or any other country would receive a stimulus check, because they are American. An American can live in any country, still be a taxpayer, property owner and be a business owner.
My question to you is why you would be asking a question like this? Americans retire in various countries and work in many countries. Many Americans are also moving out of America because of current White House occupant..The last 10 days of protesting + demonstrators over George Floyd murder affirms their choice.

Eligibility & amount of stimulus check is scaled according to income reported on most recent 1040 > $99K zero out. Actually a fair number of folks received nothing.

All expats are required to file a tax return annually and pay tax due accordingly regardless of address.

How possibly could the Treasury Dept. fairly assess & determine who is deserving and who isn't?

Lol Republicans deserve bashing at the moment. If a $500 billion slush fund with little oversight doesn’t bother you but a $1200 stimulus check does, you are part of the problem.

Because it goes to those who paid taxes to the USA. $500 billion slush fund does not stipulate those companies can invest only in the USA or even pay taxes..

I do not think that should effect you getting it. It has to do with whether or not you filed an income tax. I had to pursue mine because I pad income tax instead of getting a return. I had to add a bank routing number to their information about me.

I had something like that. It turned out that I paid taxes instead of getting a refund, they needed it clarified with a bank account to send a deposit. Once that was done, we got our checks.

And I think companies that don’t pay taxes or keep money off shore should not get bailouts. But that’s not what was legislated.
