Dual citizenship USA-Portugal

Working on dual citizenship USA-Portugal. I am a USA citizen of Portuguese descent. Both parents are children of Portuguese emigrants. The approach recommended was to get Portuguese citizenship for a parent. We (the kids) chose father, who got citizenship as the child of an emigrant.

Now I can apply as the child of a citizen (my father). Advice was, this would be easier than applying as the grandchild of a citizen.

The interest with us siblings, one could use EU citizenship for work. For me, and my sister, no urgent need, but we wanted it, to leave the option for our children, should they need it in the future (employment, etc.)

My father took about six months to get citizenship, from the time of application.

So, silly me, I expected the same, doing the same application from the same consulate.

Six months came and went, so I checked with the consulate.

I have been informed, because of interest in the dual USA-Portuguese citizenship thing, and (I am told), layoffs in the Portuguese bureaucracy, the delay is now about a year and a half......at least......

Now, I was in no particular hurry to do this, but I did want my daughter to have the option should she want it for education or work.

My daughter is starting college. The way things are going, I think she'll be in graduate school by the time all this goes through.

In this forum's collective experience, does this sound right? At least a year and a half wait for citizenship papers to go through?
