NIF representative in Portugal

Those of you who applied for a NIF number outside of Portugal, who did you use as your representative? Did you use a tax/fiscal representative such as a Portuguese lawyer? If so, we would be grateful for some referrals of English speaking lawyers in Pt who will be able to assist us with getting our NIF numbers from outside Pt, as well as provide some guidance on setting ourselves up as self-employed individuals once we arrive in Portugal. Thank you!

We used a lawyer but it was because he was reviewing a contract for us. Although he wasn't expensive, there are people who will do it for less. We paid €75 each at most, might have been 50.

We've been using Timely Solutions in Lisbon for our help in the visa process and obtaining our NIF numbers via a power of attorney was part of the service.

To 'mstimc'...using a third party such as Timely Solutions when you have a complicated situation can be a wise decision...to get NIF, the original visa, your permit...a third party quite simply deprives you of the opportunity to understand what is required and learn how to manage this for yourself. You have the water department, electrical, WiFi, gas and on an on yet to navigate; learning how things work here and why is part of getting ready for all that is yet to come. Plus, it can be done for FREE with equal or better results.

Pretty good advice to attempt to do small admin tasks yourself if you are in Portugal, and that way, you learn how things work and get a sense of accomplishment.

For those not in Portugal and needing someone to get them a NIF, I can recommend a good English-speaking lawyer: Luis Correia of Correia Dias Associates in Lisbon. His number is 351 218954290 and email address is dias@ada-legal.com. He also has an office in Tomar, central Portugal. He is specialised in property transactions among other things. I used him when I bought my house here.

Thanks Bemadam for the referral! We are in South Africa and would like to apply for our NIF from here hence my request for references on who to use on that side of the world. We are planning on doing all the other small (and big) admin tasks ourselves to save money and also get a sense of how things work :)

Does the NIF representative need to be in the same area you wish to live? For example, we are going to the Azores, can we use a representative in Lisbon?

Only time you need to be in the same room with your financial representative is if applying for a NIF in person. Otherwise the duties of the financial representative can be done by mail, email, and phone.

dancebert: Thank you! I often seen referrals for lawyers in Lisbon, not so much the Azores. Now I know I could use one of them to get our NIF. That makes things a lot easier.
