Reliable Real Estate Agents

Hello to all,
I am in Algarve area for the next four days, scouting the area as a possible retirement spot.
One of the things I have noticed in this forum, other than the dreaded paperwork issues, is that of finding housing.
Does anyone have any suggestions and/or recommendations of reliable real estate agents who speak English?
I was looking to rent for the first few months, then look into possible purchase of a place. Any thoughts on this?
I am open to the different areas of the Algarve and do not have to live near the water..
Thanks for any and all input.

I successfully rented a nice 3 bedroom house at a reasonable price while I look for a house to buy. My agent is Joao Santos and his email is geral.blueinvest@gmail.com and website is
www.blueinvest-imobiliaria.pt. It is not easy to find houses that are for rent for the whole year as most are being rented short term. I found 5 houses to look at in 4 months of searching. Joao specializes in long term rentals, among other things.

I know of an agent/landlord with a nice rental property in the hills just North of Tavira. And, I know a landlord in Santa Luzia just South of Tavira (on the coast), that owns several rentals in town. She and her husband were the only ones willing to provide us a certified lease for our Visa application. Email me for more info.

Ultimately, the certification was not needed, but they would have done it had I requested it. Very flexible people willing to help with our needs for temp. housing pursuant to acquiring residency.

Estate agents here are a joke and expect you to rent the first property they show you. They have no MLS or single database platform where all property listings can be found. Thus, you have to search website after website.....it's rather archaic, time consuming and aggravating. Many times the listing you see online, is already leased or sold. Bear in mind too that agents don't need a license.

Leasing property here (Algarve) during the Summer months especially, is big business for owners. Big business. As such, owners are using their home as an ATM machine. Raking in huge amounts of rent that is so attractive to them, that their properties won't be available either for lease or for that matter even for sale - until after the honey quits flowing. Which will be Sept. October. After that time you will find much more available inventory. Right now in the Summer, they're too addicted to the cash flow.

Sometimes it's now what you know, it's who you know. And, that mindset, seems to work well here for the sake of opportunity and convenience.

Dear Wallvestor,
Thanks for the great advice. I will be in contact in the future with more questions and to seek out the people you recommend as my time to move here gets closer.
I have contacted one real estate company and you hit it on the head. I explained that I am doing preliminary research as I am at least a year away from moving here and they agent kept pushing a condominium that isn't even built yet.
Sheesh!
Thanks again for your information. Will be in contact

We made good use of the services of imochique.com. They are located in Monchique (obviously). They found us a very reasonably priced farm (not quite a ruin) which we restored, with their assistance.
