What is it like to retire in Leuven?

"Life for a retiree in Leuven can be quite fulfilling and vibrant. The city is known for its rich history, beautiful architecture, and high quality of life. There are plenty of cultural attractions to explore, such as the stunning Gothic Town Hall, the Grand Beguinage, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the M-Museum Leuven, which showcases both old masters and contemporary art. Leuven is also home to a number of parks and gardens, providing ample opportunities for outdoor recreation. The Kruidtuin, or Botanical Garden, is a popular spot for a leisurely stroll, while the nearby Provinciaal Domein Kessel-Lo offers hiking trails, swimming pools, and mini-golf. The city has a lively nightlife, largely due to the presence of the University of Leuven, one of the oldest universities in the world. There are numerous bars, cafes, and restaurants to choose from, many of which are located in the Oude Markt, or Old Market Square, often referred to as the longest bar in the world. While Leuven is predominantly Flemish-speaking, there is an active expat community in the city. The university attracts students and academics from around the world, contributing to the city's international feel. There are also several organizations and clubs that cater specifically to expats, providing opportunities for socializing and networking. In terms of practicalities, Leuven has excellent healthcare facilities and is well-connected by public transport, with regular train services to Brussels, Antwerp, and other major Belgian cities. The cost of living is relatively high compared to other parts of Belgium, but many retirees find the city's charm and amenities to be worth the expense. Overall, Leuven offers a comfortable and stimulating environment for retirees, with a wealth of cultural and recreational activities to enjoy," said one retiree in living in Leuven, Belgium.
