What is it like to retire in Hakone?

"Life for a retiree in Hakone, can be quite serene and fulfilling. This town, located in the mountainous region of Kanagawa Prefecture, is known for its hot springs, natural beauty, and historical sites, making it an ideal place for those who appreciate tranquility and nature. While Hakone does not have a large expat community like Tokyo or Yokohama, it does attract a number of international tourists and residents who appreciate its unique charm. There are also several international communities in nearby cities, such as Yokohama, which is about an hour away by train. Cultural attractions abound in Hakone. The Hakone Open-Air Museum, for instance, features a vast collection of contemporary and modern sculptures set against the backdrop of Hakone's stunning natural scenery. The Hakone Shrine, a Shinto shrine with a history dating back over a thousand years, is another must-visit site. For those who enjoy outdoor activities, Hakone offers a wealth of options. The town is surrounded by mountains, providing ample opportunities for hiking and bird watching. Lake Ashi, a beautiful crater lake, is perfect for boat rides and fishing. The Hakone Ropeway, a cable car ride that offers panoramic views of the surrounding area, including Mount Fuji on clear days, is another popular recreational activity. Nightlife in Hakone is more subdued compared to Japan's larger cities. However, there are a number of traditional Japanese inns, or ryokans, that offer evening entertainment such as geisha performances. There are also several restaurants and bars where one can enjoy a quiet evening. Overall, life for a retiree in Hakone can be peaceful and culturally enriching, with plenty of opportunities for recreation and relaxation," said one retiree in living in Hakone, Japan.
