What is it like to retire in Mecca?

"Life for a retiree in Mecca, is likely to be quite different from what one might experience in Western countries. As one of the holiest cities in Islam, Mecca is a bustling place of religious activity, with millions of Muslims visiting each year for the Hajj pilgrimage. There isn't a significant expat community in Mecca, as Saudi Arabia's laws restrict non-Muslims from entering the city. However, for Muslim retirees, there are plenty of opportunities to engage with the local community and participate in religious activities. Cultural attractions are abundant in Mecca. The city is home to the Masjid al-Haram, the largest mosque in the world, and the Kaaba, the most sacred site in Islam. Other attractions include the Abraj Al-Bait Towers, which house a shopping mall, hotel, and museum, and the Makkah Museum, which offers insights into the city's history and culture. Recreational activities in Mecca are largely centered around religious practices. Many retirees spend their time praying, reading the Quran, and participating in religious discussions. There are also opportunities for walking and shopping in the city's many markets. Nightlife in Mecca is quite different from Western standards. Alcohol is prohibited in Saudi Arabia, and most entertainment is family-oriented. However, the city is lively at night, with shops and restaurants open late, and the Grand Mosque is open 24 hours a day. Overall, life for a retiree in Mecca is likely to be peaceful and spiritually fulfilling, with a strong sense of community and a focus on religious devotion," explained a retiree in Mecca.
