What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Oostkapelle?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Oostkapelle about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Dutch healthcare system. Prenatal care in the Netherlands is typically handled by a midwife unless there are complications, in which case a gynecologist will be involved. Secondly, consider taking Dutch language classes if you haven't already. While many Dutch people speak English, understanding the local language can make medical appointments and paperwork easier to navigate. Thirdly, start looking for a kraamzorg service early. Kraamzorg is a unique Dutch postnatal service where a nurse comes to your home for eight to ten days after the birth to help with the baby and light household chores. Next, be aware that home births are quite common in the Netherlands. If you prefer a hospital birth, discuss this with your midwife early on. Also, make sure to register your baby with the local municipality within three days of the birth. This is a legal requirement in the Netherlands. Additionally, look into childcare options well in advance. Many daycare centers in the Netherlands have long waiting lists. Lastly, connect with other expat parents in Oostkapelle or wider Netherlands. They can provide valuable advice and support, and may be able to recommend specific services or products," said a member in Oostkapelle, The Netherlands.
