As the festive season approaches, expats and digital nomads in Korea may be looking for places to soak up the holiday spirit. Korea may not be the first place that comes to mind when thinking of Christmas, but it offers a unique blend of traditional and Western celebrations. From dazzling light festivals to charming Christmas markets, there are plenty of spots across the country that come alive in December. Here are some of the best places to visit for a memorable holiday experience in Korea.

Myeongdong in Seoul

Myeongdong is one of Seoul's busiest shopping districts and it transforms into a winter wonderland during the holidays. The streets are adorned with festive decorations and lights, creating a magical atmosphere. The Myeongdong Cathedral, with its Gothic architecture, is a must-see as it becomes a backdrop for beautiful light displays. In addition to shopping, visitors can enjoy the Christmas market where they can find unique gifts, ornaments, and indulge in seasonal treats like hotteok (sweet Korean pancakes).

We Recommend: Don't miss the chance to try the street food in Myeongdong. The area is famous for its variety, and during the holidays, you can enjoy warm snacks like roasted chestnuts and sweet potatoes that are perfect for the chilly weather.

Garden of Morning Calm in Gapyeong

The Garden of Morning Calm holds the Lighting Festival, which is one of the biggest winter events in Korea. The garden is illuminated with millions of lights, creating a serene and picturesque landscape. This event typically starts in early December and runs through the winter months. The entire garden is a sight to behold, but the light tunnel and the illuminated trees are particularly breathtaking.

We Recommend: Make sure to bring your camera to capture the stunning light displays. The Garden of Morning Calm is also a great place to enjoy a peaceful walk, away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

E-World in Daegu

E-World, an amusement park in Daegu, hosts the Starlight Festival during the holiday season. The park features a towering Christmas tree and countless lights that cover the attractions and trees. The festival includes a parade, performances, and themed photo zones. Visitors can enjoy the festive atmosphere while experiencing thrilling rides and attractions.

We Recommend: Try the hot chocolate sold at the park's cafes. It's a delicious way to stay warm while enjoying the festivities, and it pairs well with the sweet treats available at the food stalls.

Busan Christmas Tree Festival

Busan's annual Christmas Tree Festival takes place in the Nampo-dong area and is a highlight for both locals and visitors. The streets are lined with beautifully decorated Christmas trees, and there are various performances, concerts, and events that take place throughout the festival period, usually starting in late November and running until early January. The highlight is the giant Christmas tree and the light shows that accompany it.

We Recommend: Be sure to check out the street food vendors for some local Busan delicacies, such as ssiat hotteok, a sweet and nutty pancake that is a winter favorite.

European Christmas Market in Seoul

The European Christmas Market, held at the Seongbukcheon Fountain Square, offers a taste of traditional European holiday markets right in Seoul. This market typically takes place over a weekend in early December and features stalls selling handmade crafts, Christmas decorations, and European food and drinks. It's a great place to find unique gifts and enjoy the festive atmosphere.

We Recommend: Don't leave without trying the mulled wine and the variety of European sausages on offer. They're a perfect treat to keep you warm while browsing the market stalls.

Jeonju Hanok Village

Jeonju Hanok Village, known for its traditional Korean houses, offers a unique holiday experience with its blend of Korean culture and Christmas festivities. The village is adorned with lights and decorations, and visitors can enjoy traditional performances, workshops, and a Christmas market. The combination of traditional Korean architecture and festive decorations makes for a unique and picturesque holiday outing.

We Recommend: Sample the traditional Korean street food like pajeon (savory pancakes) and bibimbap, which you can find at the local market. These dishes will give you a taste of Korean culture while you enjoy the holiday festivities.

Christmas Market at Haeundae Beach in Busan

Haeundae Beach is not just a summer destination; it also hosts a charming Christmas Market during the holiday season. The market features a variety of stalls selling handmade goods, Christmas decorations, and seasonal treats. The sound of the waves combined with the twinkling lights creates a unique and relaxing holiday atmosphere.

We Recommend: Try the hot fishcake soup, a popular Busan specialty, to warm up while strolling along the beachfront market.

Everland in Yongin

Everland, Korea's largest theme park, goes all out for Christmas with its Christmas Fantasy event. The park is transformed with spectacular decorations, including a massive Christmas tree and a parade featuring Santa Claus. The event usually starts in mid-November and lasts until the end of December. Everland's Christmas Fantasy is perfect for those who love theme parks and want to experience a high-energy holiday celebration.

We Recommend: Don't miss the light parade and the fireworks show that take place in the evening. They are truly a highlight and offer a dazzling end to a day of fun and festivities.

Whether you're looking for a traditional market experience, a dazzling light festival, or a fun-filled day at an amusement park, Korea has plenty of options to get you into the holiday spirit. These destinations offer a unique blend of Korean culture and Christmas cheer, making for an unforgettable December in Korea.
