Student Visa - Temporary Stay or Residence?

Hi All,

I signed up to a 'Portuguese for foreigners' course in a Lisbon Uni starting Feb 2019. It's part time, about 5-6 hours a week and goes for a semester.

While I know this qualifies me for a temporary stay visa, I'd like to know does it also qualify me for the temporary residency visa?

I'd like to apply for the temporary residency visa if possible .- it seems to afford me extensions if I choose to continue studying beyond a year. I figured after the first semester, I'd decide whether to stay on or go home. The course is from an official university, but it's also part time and low in hours so I'm unsure whether this qualifies me for the 'student' section of a residency visa. I can find no information on part time/full time /hours required for the visa online.

Temporary Stay visa requires me to have health insurance for the entire stay and a return ticket home - a higher outlay for dates that I'm uncertain about at this moment, whereas if I could qualify for the Temporary Residency visa it seems that I could buy insurance for a shorter amount of time AND I don't have to buy a fully flexible one way ticket home ($$$)

Has anyone had any experience with this?

I've trawled this site and others to no avail, I cant find the answer, and my consulate in Australia has not replied to my email in weeks.. I need to apply very soon if I want to meet the deadline, so I'm asking here for help.

I've got all the other documentation ready to go, I just need to know which visa I qualify for before spending $$$ that I don't need to.

Any advice would be great!

Thanks in advance,
Emmie
