Bird Watchers ~ Chilean Flamingos in Salinas
View/Add Comments (0 Comments) |
The best chance to see the Chilean Flamingo in Ecuador is at the Ecuasal lagoons (permission needed) near Salinas on the Santa Elena Peninsula. Our Flamingos arrive mid October and remain here until mid May. The Chilean Flamingo's plumage is pinker than that of the slightly larger Greater Flamingo, but less so than Caribbean Flamingo. It can also be identified by its greyish legs with pink "knees" and the more extensive black markingson the bill. When driving past on the Via Mar Brava towards the new Salinas Airport, glance towards the salt flats and you will spot the "bubble gum" pink of the flamingos as they live and nest among the shrimp rich salty lagoon waters of this area. Other bird life includes herrons, egrets, pelicans and roseate spoonbills.
