Renewing Investment Visa

Our investment of $25,500 in order to be granted residency in Ecuador was up on the 3rd August. We have a lawyer in Quito busy with the renewal.
We thought it would just be a case of signing for the renewal.
But now it seems as though we have to go through a whole rigmarole again including obtaining documents from the Migration Police here in Cuenca.
I was wondering whether anyone else has had to go through this procedure and if it was also so complicated.
Does this happen every year that the investment matures?
It is costing us money each time.
