Considering Moving to EC

I am considering retiring in the next 18 months, and moving my wife and myself to Ecuador. I've heard that $1000 per month would be sufficient to live on, and want to verify that this info is correct. Also, my wife has some concerns about the safety in EC. Any thoughts about that would be much appreciated. Finally, what are 3 - 4 of the top cities to live in...I don't mind a lot of ex-pats, but neither do I need a large community of ex-pats. I, too, am interested in teaching English, so opportunities in that area would be a factor in deciding where to retire. Thanks!
