Coming in June for 90 days - Jobs?

I'm done with the U.S.A. I served the Feds for 17 years and I'm completely done with the entire place. I've been to 24 countries on five continents and Iiked the easy lifestyle of many of those places compared to what we have here. I've decided for certain that I'd be happier in a Spanish speaking country.

So, I'm middle aged, semi-retired and ready to move away from Amerika for good before it all crashes and the looting starts.

I've visited many of the Latin American countries and really enjoyed myself. The US government taught me Spanish and I get along very well with my future paisanos al sur.

Therefore, I'm coming to Ecuador in June whether you guys like it or not. I've had my heart set on it for a number of years and I think I'm going to love it much.

But, before I jump too hastily into permanently moving to a new environment, I'm going to spend 90 days at a hostel I found in Quito. I figure 3 months is surely enough to decide whether or not I like Ecuador.

So, my questions are:

1) How strict is the gov't on immigration status? If I come down and love it and decide to overstay my visitor's visa, what are the odds I will ever have any trouble if I cause no one any trouble? Yes, I know there's always a "chance" of getting into trouble with immigration, but what are the real odds of being arrested and deported for being a visa overstay?

2) Are there any realistic job opportunities at all for a Gringo in Ecuador? I don't want anything fancy. I'd love to teach English if that's not merely an internet scam.

I've read this blog sporadically for the last three years but just now signed up since my travel date is getting closer.

Thanks a bunch for the nice blog.
