Luggage safety

Over the last 2 years I've read on this and other forums about bringing to and taking from Ecuador various items in luggage.

People have talked about bringing small appliances and even TV sets and taking back craft items that they sell or gift to others.

My question is, without the ability to lock your luggage, how do you avoid breakage and/or theft of these types of items?

My wife and I hope to arrive in Ecuador with our Pensioner visas in hand within the next 2 months. The answer to the luggage question and any other airline ideas would be greatly appreciated. We will be flying from Phoenix to Quito most likely leaving from Sky Harbor Airport (PHX) or an east suburb airport called Gateway.

Thanks in advance, we need all the advice we can get.
