Learning a New Language

When you are beginning to learn Spanish, or any other new language, its good to have realistic expectations. I've been teaching EFL for many years. When we learn language as young children, we have kind of an "app" in our brain that helps us remember structures even though we can't read when we begin learning. Unfortunately, as we get older, that "app" loses its functionality and we have to study grammar structures, and context, etc, to help us remember the correct way to say things. Programs like Rosetta Stone can be helpful in giving us these "structures". But being immersed in the language and USING it, even if you stumble a lot at first is what helps us to be able to actually communicate. So don't get frustrated, and don't expect to be perfect. It is rare for someone who learns a language in adulthood to become perfectly fluent. I always tell my students that I'm not looking for them to be perfect. I want them to be able to tell me what they want to say. THAT is communication.
