Dengue reports on the Coast.

An 11-year-old boy from Los Rios Province has become the first person in Ecuador to die of dengue this year. From January 1st through the 19th, there have been 476 cases reported of dengue in 14 provinces, slightly more than the same period last year. There have been 176 cases in Sucumbios, 78 in Guayas and 28 in El Oro.

Dengue is sometimes referred to as breakbone fever. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle and joint pains, and a skin rash. The virus is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

NOTE:
It is important that you do not treat the symptoms of dengue with aspirin, ibuprofen (advil, Motrin) or naproxen soium (Alleve) as all NSAIDS are anti coagulant and cause dengue to turn to the more serious hemoraghic fever. Those on blood thinners such as wrafrain cumadin and plavix should eb especially vigilant to protect from mosquito bites and inform their doctor should they get flu like symptoms that they have been in a dengue area.
