Correa's interview in Madrid

President Correa said the government has the right to nationalize companies, if it serves the common good. He made that statement during an interview with the Madrid newspaper ABC.es. Correa added that he sees no need to do that at present. He was asked a variety of questions.

One of the highlights of his government:
"What cannot be seen, the change of attitude in the people. The people had lost hope, because this was a shattered country. You are, in part, witnesses of what. The hundreds of thousands of Ecuadorians who had to emigrate to Spain when Ecuador was not a country of great emigration. In 10 years we have had 7 presidents; three consecutive governments before ours had been overthrown after having betrayed our people."

Will he run again?
He reiterated that he has no plans to run after 2017 and will get out of politics altogether. He said he doesn't want to disturb the newer generation who will be running the country. Correa also said he doesn't see a need to amend the Constitution to allow longer terms in office.

How the elites have perpetuated poverty:
"One of the great enigmas of development is why Latin America is in poverty, despite its vast natural resources. Part of the answer lies in the elite class that dominated. The bourgeoisie monopolized the fruits of progress, and did not distribute (the wealth) to improve the rest. The (fruits of progress) were used to differentiate, to establish exclusive neighborhoods, exclusive schools which do not necessarily give better education..."

Why he wants a new press law:
"Because here we have one of the worst press in the world, which has nothing to do with the Spanish press, but there are major objections to the Spanish press. Because instead of reporting are set to make policy without assuming those responsibilities. Manipulate, misinform ... I think that a truly free and independent press is essential to democracy, but bad news is deadly to democracy. And to prevent abuse of this press is needed social control through laws."
