health insurance in Ecuador

Not surprisingly many of us have heard a lot of conflicting “facts” about health care in Ecuador.
Some say the health care is completely free, but we find that is not absolutely true. Some say there is no need for health insurance because if healthcare is not free, it is so cheap that you do not need insurance. However, that does not always seem to be the case either.
Given that folks on this forum have a wide array of experience, and opinions, it would be helpful to get feedback concerning your experience with Ecuadorian health insurance.

I and others are looking into a group health insurance policy through an Ecuadorian company, and whenever I try to tell some of our local expats about it, they have all sorts of questions and ideas about local healthcare options. This forum might provide answers to those questions.
