Salinas

I'm hoping for a brutally honest answer and I'm positive after saying that I'll get one, LOL. I like what I've read here and elsewhere about Salinas and I'd like to offer what I'm hoping to find there. I'm single, early 50's, will be in Ecuador sometime in the next 2 to 4 years max. I'm looking for a community that's not too big but has good infrastructure and weather. I want to eat out at least once a day at reasonable cost, which to me would be a healthy meal for not more than $5, with a good selection of reasonably priced restaurants. I like to read, and will be bringing my tablet with me to restaurant to read newspaper on it as well as books. I like to take long walks for exercise. I enjoy surfing the Internet, would like to have quality broadband not only for surfing but also for using a device that'll connect me with U.S. TV as well as using a VPN for Netflix. I know Salinas has a multiplex with movies in English, a real plus. I've read here about economical studio apartments, plenty for me. My big question is it reasonable to expect the above lifestyle in Salinas? Will I be able to look at a tablet in public without being targeted for robbery, which in some cities is apparently a legitimate concern? Assuming I don't go for long walks after dark can I reasonably expect to be able to do so safely? How's Salinas for overall safety compared to much bigger cities? I'm not really the fearful type, pretty big guy actually, but I read quite a bit about serious safety issues in parts of Ecuador so thought I'd ask. How are the public markets for produce? Good selection? Is the above lifestyle doable on less than $1000 a month? I'm a very light drinker, not a big partier, think it's possible on less than a $1000 in some places but wonder about Salinas. Thanks for any advice, brutal or otherwise!
