Crossing in Colombia from Ecuador

Hi all,

I'm coming to visit Ecuador this summer for the full length of my 90 day visitor visa, and I've decided to also visit Colombia afterwards. I'd like to ride the bus from Quito to either Bogota or Medellin. Have any of your ever crossed the land port between the two countries? Is it pretty laid back, or is it bothersome?

Also, I've flown internationally a lot, but I've never traveled round trip air by returning via a different departure city. Do airlines offer open-ended round trip tickets where I can fly into Ecuador but return to the US by departing out of Bogota 6 months later? Will the Ecuadoran aduanas give me a hassle if I don't have a return ticket in hand when I arrive in Quito?
