Today the Social Security Administration processes claims for retirement on-line. You can file for SS Retirement 90 days before your 62nd Birthday. You answer questions on-line (about 15 minutes), they assign you a reference number. They process and in about 10 days they have an answer regarding your acceptance.

When I checked my reference notice on-line after 10 days I was told that I had been sent a letter (without mentioning why or what the letter was about!) and they had no further information.

I spoke with a representative to clear up an address problem and was told the letter would be arriving shortly; it's their Official "Benefit Award Letter" which states the date you begin collecting SS Retirement.

So, something you should know is that if your Birthday falls on July 1st, they don't start paying benefits until August First, and since they don't issue checks until mid-month, around the 14th, that means you won't get your first deposit made into your account until September 14th (that would be for the month of August).
