Writer looking to experience rural living in Ecuador

Buenos dias!

I'm currently living in Riobamba with a very well-off family and teaching English at a local elementary school. In many ways, my life is perfect. The family takes fantastic care of me, my job is great, and my expenses are non-existant.
However, part of me isn't satisfied. As part of a writing assignment, I'm interested in moving to a much more rural area of Ecuador (my target is the Cotala/Banos region), renting or purchasing a small plot of land with a one-room cement dwelling, and experiencing the lifestyle that many of Ecuador's rural indigenous living in poverty live.
I have a writing/travel companion who is willing to jump into this endeavor with me on a two-month assignment. However, we have some questions:

-How do we go about inquiring into and renting such a property? I've seen a few dwellings that fit my wants in the mountains outside of Cotalo (near Banos) with "Se Vendo" scrawled on the side, but am not sure how to contact the owner, nor what a reasonable price would be.

-I would be interested in hearing more about hunting/fishing in the region if any of you have any information. We are planning to attempt to live in absolute poverty ($1-$1.50 per person per day) and know we could at least survive on rice/beans with that budget, but for nutrition sake, would be interested in finding alternate ways to acquire some food.

As we get farther into this project, I'm sure I'll have dozens more questions. I look forward to hearing any responses and advice! Thanks!
