I just found this forum and would like to thank everyone for such excellent information. As I've browsed the threads, I've learned quite a bit - and come up with quite a few new questions. My wife and I are toying with the idea of moving to Ecuador in about 2 years. We are retired, but involved right now in the States.

I have visited Costa Rica many times in the past, and as I look around, Ecuador seems to have many of the attributes I liked about C.R. a decade ago.

We still have many, many things to consider, such as our most desired temperature range (probably 60F to 80F) and what we wish for everyday activities. We are pretty healthy and expect to keep active. I have spent my life as a professional environmentalist, but my wife is a retired school teacher. I would probably like fishing and such as I've always done, but she could be happy, sitting beside the pool with a pina colada most days.

So, you kind people keep posting, and I'll keep lurking and perhaps we'll be down to visit for a week or two this winter. Then, if things are right for us, I expect we'll rent for a few months while we decide on a more permanent setting.
