Current Expats: What was Your Intro to Ecuador?

The recent posts looking for an organized group tour for new wannabe expats raised a question only those living in Ecuador can answer: did you do such a tour before moving or did you go to Ecuador and scout it out independently. That means independently using a local driver or guide, or traveling around Ecuador by yourself using buses or flights.
We all know the statistics. Most people who "permanently" relocate from Canada and the USA go back within a few years.
It would never occur to me to surround myself with other gringos and be driven to a new town each day as a way to get to know Ecuador.
Instead we narrowed the communities that interest us to three using internet research. We will spend a week in each location to start. We will stay in rental apartments, not hotels. We will do a few day trips from those home bases to a few other communities on our radar but the main goal is to experience living in each community, if only for a week.
We plan to return to the places we like best for a longer stay in different seasons.
Ecuadorian residents from the US or Canada, who gets the better perspective, the gringo tour participant or the person who tries to figure it out solo?
