It's Carnaval! In Ecuador ~ March 1 through 4 2014

View/Add Comments (0 Comments) |

Carnaval is the celebration of Excess and Naughtiness the days from Sunday through Tuesday prior to Ash Wednesday in the Roman Catholic religious tradition. The word "carna" is tucked into the word and actualy refers to the last days of eating red meat prior to the days of introspection of the Lenten season prior to Holy Week (Semana Santa) which culminate with Good Friday (which is celebrated with the famous Sopa Fenesca meal) and Easter Sunday which is always a red meat -- based meal. Carnaval Food is --- FUN FOOD --- Parillada, Street Food, Greasy, Fried, and Salty and Sweet -- and Drinking. Sunday Dry Laws are lifted this weekend. And Carnaval is naughtiness -- expect to be sprayed by Silly String and this Colored Foam soap stuff that vanishes and smells like cheap light perfume. And the occasional small water balloon or water gun. You may want to watch from the sidelines because -- yeah Gringos are favored targets -- In Salinas --- heh heh -- there is a Posse of Granies who fight are wicked with the spray can! This is all in very good fun -- we hope to keep it that way for years to come -- Stay in lighted areas -- if you feel unsafe leave and go to an area with a police presence -- stay in groups Have FUN! LAFF!
