the simple truth about it

You keep looking, you find what you need to know.

2011 was an El Nino year in Ecuador, maybe the El Nino year in recent history. Cuenca gets only 28.5” annual rainfall -- but in ’11 Cuenca had 72” of rainfall!!! It was much worse on the coast. It was the year of rain. Glad I didn’t move there in late 2010.

In January 2012, quite predictably, mosquitoes were going nuts in the country. In the 1st 25 days of January, there were over 400 cases of dengue fever in Ecuador. Only 6 cases of malaria, none of them anywhere near where I might go. Forget malaria. However, the place that was dengue central was the province in which you find Salinas & Guyaquil.

However, in those 25 days in January of ’12, there were absolutely no cases whatsoever of either dengue fever or malaria in the province in which Cuenca is found.

So that is that, my friends. Mosquitoes love me. I hate them. Cuenca it is. No, I don’t like it that it’s usually 46-50 as a nighttime low. No, I’m not happy that it rarely gets into the 70’s, though nearly always gets into the 60’s. It’s too damn cool & there’s no central heat in the entire city. But it is healthy & beautiful, altitude has never bothered me, & between layers, jackets & the liberal use of space heaters (& the outside possibility of somebody to keep me warm), it’s nothing a man cannot conquer…& conquer it I shall! With glee!!! ;-D

Nobody told me any of this: I had to do my research & puzzle it out on my own. I did, without ever leaving my town. It paid off. I’m glad I’m good at this sort of stuff: now I know what to do. I’m happy. Thanks for being on board with me in this great adventure! It is going to be fun. Please help me do it smart & do it right! Blessings.
