Latin American crime across all countries..

Hi Expats, I still have 4 years before I move down there somewhere. I already know that violent crime is a lot more prevalent in good old USA. However, I am not comparing the USA, but comparing the crime in all of the central American countries from actually further north to Mexico & Belize, all the way down to Costa Rica, Panama, and every country in between. Now, there is crime to some degree in every single country. I realize there is no perfect places, just trying to make the right choice. I am no newbie, as I am a retired navy Chief, so I have seen more places and more unusual things most people. I am looking at my 2nd retirement coming in 4 more years. I really like the climate options in Ecuador, so that is a big plus. I just havn't got that warm fuzzy feeling yet, when I read all of the threads. I realize, take the appropriate precautions, don't go to bad areas, or places that you don't know, get some big dogs. I was planning on coming down in the summer of 2015, to scope out some places there in Ecuador. So any other insight that you expats post is appreciated. I know some of the business folks, may have some bias, and I am not saying all, so don't get defensive. Just trying to be friendly, and get a really good assessment of Ecuador. Regards... Jimmy
