Medicare for expats

There are some shady characters in Ecuador selling expats a program that allegedly makes them eligible for Medicare part B. What they are not telling you is that if you sign up--you will be committing Medicare fraud. You have to provide a US mailing address and visit a primary provider in the US every six months. I am guessing that the 2 trips to the US would exceed the Medicare part B benefits anyway.

There is a wrinkle in Medicare part A that is interesting. This is the free part of Medicare that you cannot opt out of and it pays your hospital bills. If you have to be hospitalized in the US, you should try to go one of the facilities like the Cleveland Clinic, MD Anderson or the Mayo Clinic where all the doctors are employees and are not in private practice--hence no doctor's bill. The Cleveland Clinic has locations in Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach, the Mayo Clinic is in Jacksonville in addition to Scottsdale AZ and Rochester MN
