Starting From Scratch

Can anyone recommend a clean, fairly cheap hotel in Quito where a person could stay while looking for a furnished apartment? I'll be heading for Ecuador during the first week of December and am planning a good, long stay (180 days?), if all goes well.

Would I be wise to stay briefly in Quito and head elsewhere? Cuerta sounds marvelous

I'm concerned about the language challenge. My high school Spanish lessons (many long decades ago) are the dimmest memory, and it's going to be important to get started with lessons, preferably private. Are those easy to find?

In the larger cities, are there ethnic neighborhoods where Europeans, Americans, etc., have settled? Are there French, Germans, Italians here and there?
