US Expat Going to Riyadh

I am an American/English nurse going to Riyadh this fall for a year to work on the pediatrics unit of King Faisal Specialist Hospital. Like many people who have posted here, I am looking for a little info from people who have been there about the city and the KSA in general. Although the hospital provides housing, I'm told that many of the Western male nurses and staff choose to live in a compound, and I'm wondering which ones are best. Preferably, I'd want something near KFSH. Also, while I've heard that housing is less expensive there, I've also seen prices around 80,000SAR per year for a one-bedroom, which is about the equivalent of $1800 per month -- where I come from (Massachusetts) that's kind of a lot for a one bedroom apartment!

Finally, I'd be interested in people's take on leisure time and meeting people and living among the Saudis themselves. I've read many things (most recently the "Culture Shock: Saudia Arabia" guide) and gotten mixed answers.
