Moving to Jubail

We are just about ready to sign the contract of employment in Jubail - but trying to get into an expat compound is proving exceptionally difficult. With this in mind please can you answer the following for me - I need some honest help with this one:

* If ex-pats do not live in ex-pat housing compounds, is there sufficient other, family style accommodation available in areas that will offer me and our daughter a fair amount of freedom: e.g. being able to walk to shops, would the school bus collect my daughter, is there somewhere where I would be able to exercise on a daily basis (gym facilities)? Would I be able to leave the house on my own - obviously dressed in the accepted attire?

* How would I be able to get around, would we have to employ a driver or are the taxis reliable and fairly inexpensive? I have read that a woman alone in a car with another man who is not her husband is frowned on, is this true? Or maybe it will be possible to employ a part-time driver?

I am fairly flexible and do adjust quite quickly - it is probably my daughter, who I worry about more. If there are any expats from South Africa that would be an even bigger bonus.

Any advice, assistance or suggestions you can provide would be very, very much appreciated. I have a list of about 20 compounds in Jubail how do I go about trying to get accommodation. The company has already tried from their side but with no luck.
