Hi All,
My name is Jennifer and I'm going to be moving out to Abu Dhabi from Canada this summer to teach. However, I'm worried about the social scene out there and being able to make friends who like to go out, travel around, experience the culture in general. If anyone is interested in perhaps making an email list I'd be happy to get something started - it seems there are lots of people who feel the same!
Cheers all!
Jen

Hi Felix,
As most people tell me - DOOOO IT! I've accepted the contract in Abu Dhabi and am VERY much looking forward to going over. I've done a lot of research - the city seems absolutely amazing. I think that starting to network before you go over there helps with the whole social scene. I'd be happy to send you some of the info that people have been good enough to send me - but be careful - it will convince you!

Hi Jennifer,
and all of you who replied, I'm in the same boat. I'll be living in uea acceptinag a teaching position esl. I would really appreciate if anybody who is also teaching or living there is willing to give me any useful information for a single girl from Canada.
What is the adult class usually like versus esl internattional student class in Canada?
I'm interested in attire is it better to bring it or can you buy it there and if so what is the average cost.
I was also curious about the cell. What is the best way to go about it. If I have a cell phone can I bring it?
I would truly appreciate any responses in forum or privately at
alta.2222@gmail.com.
Thanks a lot.
Alta.

Morning.
I have read with interest the comments. Abu Dhabi is more laid back than Dubai and one important aspect is that car parking is quite a mission.
I enjoy Abu Dhabi, because it is so different to Dubai, but I would like to suggest that you buy a book called Explorer Abu Dhabi. This is an informative book, but it lack specifics on entertainment. Please feel free to contact me on morrishe@emirates.net.ae and I would be glad to help, further.

Hi Trish, my name is Erin and I'm also a single 34 year old woman who just moved here from Washington DC. I just joined this forum! I just moved here last week (into a flat) but have been working here for just a few months. How has your move in been? I know a few people but would enjoy meeting more... It seems kind of difficult to find things to do besides the malls, movies, and nightclubs. Have you found any other groups or clubs?
I'm thinking about having a dinner party rotation with a few people I know here so let me know if you are interested! :)
Cheers,
Erin

Dear Jen (Pennylane),
I was reading the many responses to your email and I was thrilled to see that there are many of us single women living in AUH seeking for friends to do things with!
I am 33, a New Yorker, and I just moved to AUH a month ago. Have you been able to meet with some of the people who've responded to you? Is there a group of you that i could perhaps meet up with? Or does anyone know of book clubs or other social circles I could get involved with here? I love living in Abu Dhabi, but I'm finding it hard to meet people.
Kind regards to all,
Leni

HI all, first time have visited this site and joined up to get a better idea of what to exect moving to UAE. I am in the process of looking for work in Dubai. However somewhat ignorant to what the difference between Dubai and Abu Dhabi is? Just different cities? It seems Dubai recieves most of the publicity... I am also single female - from Australia. Looking at media/PR type employment. Any tips/information would be helpful.... What are salaries like for females?

Abu Dhabi has it's own charm. It's smaller in many regards in comparison to Dubai, and not as busy. Fewer people; smaller in size; fewer tall buildings, and building in general, lesser traffic, etc. Abu Dhabi is working on its image, for promotional purposes. Abu Dhabi is the emirate of the person responsible for 'creating' the UAE, Late President Sheikh Zayed Al Nahayan, so from historical perspective it is very important.

Hi Jen,
We'll be moving to Abu Dhabi from Seattle this August. I've lived in the UAE before but never in Abu Dhabi. I think you'll find it quite sociable-especially as a teacher. The profession attracts a lot of like-minded people who enjoy travel, experiencing the local culture(s), etc. PM me. I'm curious to know where you'll be working.

Hi Rach-Do you have a job here and do you have children? I think that answers to your own questions will depend on these factors. I think many of us make friends through work, but trailing spouses w/o jobs find it to be more of an adjustment. There are clubs for work-at-home mothers (and forums that meet monthly...check out Abu DHabi women's forum). However, if you're single it is more of a challenge to meet people.

Hi: I'm considering a move there as well, from Los Angeles. Have you already moved? How have you found working and living there? Have you used any good networking/exchange sites or forums to make new friends and get basic information? You can reach me at karen@nativechic.com. Good luck! Karen

Are you guys all still in Dubai?
I may be relocating from the UK to Fujairah to teach and I'm wondering what the social scene is like?!
I'm a 25 yr old female.
Thank you :)
