Critical Skills and Sponsors

Hello,

My boyfriend, of 3 years, grew up in Co. Claire. He has been living in the US for many years. He recently applied for and received dual citizenship in the US and is now ready to return to Ireland to live. This has been his dream for a long, long time. He plans on moving back in April or May of this year. He has been saving up and has friends that he can stay with while he looks for work and a place to live. I will say that we met at work. He is a medical technologist. He has been able to transfer his degree and is in the process of getting his certification to work in Ireland. He worked in a lab in Ireland and has stayed friends with people there who will be able to refer him to positions when he arrives. I have a degree in Chemistry and have over 10 years of work experience in research and clinical labs doing work focused mainly in microbiology.

My boyfriend would like for me to go with him. I am a US citizen. I have never traveled to Ireland. I have looked a little online and found that there are Critical Skills Employment catagories that I might fall into. I would love to hear from someone who has been through a similar situation and find out how it worked for them. How difficult or easy is this?

Also, my boyfriend is talking about sponsoring me when I get over there. I have looked at the Immigration site and read about de facto relationships. I do not think that this would apply in our situation because we are not living together now so we don't have a lease or a joint account. What exactly is a sponsorship, is it the same or different than a de facto relationship and what does it entail.

If someone else out there has done this and would be willing to share their experiences it would really set my mind at ease about this huge leap of faith that I am making.

Many thanks!
